It is produced by pummeling the seeds of Ricinus communis plants which grow in wild wastelands in tropical countries. It is also used as an ornamental plant in regions having milder weather and is also grown on a large scale for the production of biodiesel. Castor oil is one of the first vegetable oils to be used for industrial purposes because of its high viscosity and lubricating properties and they are also used for medicinal benefits. They are spread across Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Mediterranean basin.

Benefits Of Castor Oil

They are often considered to be crude products. This oil has wonderful usages that it has to be in all houses because it has its own anti-bacterial and various medicinal and therapeutic benefits.

Used to relieve from pain :

It is a triglyceride compound and around 90 percent of the oil consists of ricinoleic acid, which is used for reducing inflammation and swelling of joints and tissues. Oral consumption of 2 spoons of castor oil in a glass of water provides relief in cases of severe rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be applied on the painful area. It provides relief from back pain and abdominal pain. It also provides a soothing effect during the menstrual times to woman.

Used for Hair :

    Essential acids and certain Vitamins present in castor oil promotes hair health. Castor oil stimulates hair growth when applied by charging up blood circulation by removes the bacterial and fungal infections and dandruff from the scalp. Castor oil provides the hair roots with adequate nourishment which stops hair loss. It retains the moisture of the hair and stops it from drying. Castor oil helps in the thickening of eyebrows.

Its benefits can be felt even after that both by mother and child as a gentle massage of the mother’s breasts with castor oil increases milk production.

Laxative agent :

Ricinoleic acid gets secreted in the intestine and then it starts functioning as a laxative when castor oilmis consumed orally. Its hotness starts the digestion of the undigested food residue and cleanses the digestive tract by helping in proper bowel movement. Undecylenic acid is a breakdown product of the ricinoleic fatty acid found abundantly in it has a strong anti-fungicidal property. It can be also used to treat  ringworm, athlete’s foot and tinea cruris as the azole drugs.

Applying the scalp with castor oil results in extra hair growth. Massaging every night with castor oil on the head helps in the better growth of hair. Applying castor oil on the scanty eyebrows results in the growth of dense hair. Castor oil enhances the natural color of the hair and gives it a look rich and thick. This oil lacks moisture. When applied, it preserves the moisture in the hair shaft and makes each strand appear thicker and darker.

Used as a natural mascara :

Mascara make the eyelashes look fuller and darker and defines the eyes better. This is traditionally made by burning vegetable oils mixed with herbal extracts and essential oils. The soot is then collected on a surface daubed with castor oil. It is  safer than any available mascara product in the market. Applying castor oil to the eyelashes can result in a thicker and darker eyelashes.

Used as a Lubricant :

Castor oil helps in lubricating machines. It works equally good in high and low temperatures. Castor oil does not spoil rubber  so it is used safely used in cycle pumps with rubber seals. Castor oil can be also used on kitchen appliances that need lubrication.

Used as a preservative :

Castor oil has antifungal properties and thus it is used as a preservative in food industry. Dried grains and pulses are coated with the oil when they have to be preserved for a long time. Castor oil repels the insect pests that spoil them. It is removed when these foodstuffs are soaked in water and rinsed before cooking.

Used to moisturize skin :

Castor oil is moisturizes dry skin. The oil is highly viscous and penetrates deep into the skin and nourishes it with fatty acids.

Used as natural sleep aids :

Castor oil can make us fall asleep without delay. Though it is not clear as to how castor oil induces sleep but those who have used it on their hair or around the eyes have applaud it for its effectiveness.

To treat Babies with colic acid :

Babies cry uncontrollably due to colicky pain in the first few months of life may be due to gas, abnormal spasms, or hindrances in the developing gastrointestinal tract. Castor oil provides relief when other oral remedies fail to. When applied externally on the abdominal area the analgesic or its soporific property gives quick relief to the baby.

To Treat Animals and Pets :

Pets constantly lick their wounds which only exacerbates the skin condition. Castor oil is safe to apply on minor cuts and also on infected areas. The antimicrobial properties will result in healing. These animals may also find the oil unpalatable and stop licking the spots. Even if they lick, it may cause no harm than loose stools.

Other Uses :

To apply some chemotherapeutic medicines to cancerous cells, castor oil is used as a medium. In the medication of breast cancer and other tumours, Cremophor EL is used as an agent for cancer drug Paclitaxel. Eye irritations can also be cured by applying castor oil.
