If you are looking for ways to fall asleep, aromatherapy may help you.  Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils (the pure essence of a plant) to improve your psychological and physical well being.

Here are some essential oils that have been shown to help you fall asleep fast and may also help with middle insomnia. (When you wake up and can’t go back to sleep.)

Lavender is a pretty plant that has sage green leaves and purple flowers.  It has been shown to calm the nervous system and relax the body.  Lavender has been used in aromatherapy to fight insomnia, anxiety, depression and fatigue.  Studies show that people who use lavender to battle insomnia sleep more soundly and wake up feeling very well rested.  It is believed to increase your slow-wave sleep time.  This is important because this is when your heartbeat slows and your body relaxes.

When you inhale lavender, you will experience a soothing and calming effect.  It is readily available and smells wonderful! If you are looking for easy ways to fall asleep, lavender is one of the best.

Sandalwood is earth, woodsy and warm.  It has been used for decades to relieve nervous tension because of its anti-depressive and calmative qualities.  It is helpful for stress, depression and insomnia.  By relieving tension, sandalwood can help you fall asleep faster.

Another great alternative for people that have trouble falling asleep is Mandarin.  Mandarin is not quite as popular as lavender but it runs a close second for its use by those looking for ways to fall asleep faster.  This oil is gentle oil that is often used for children.  It helps encourage sleep by easing nervous tension and soothing irritability.

The fruity sweetness of Chamomile is a welcome treatment of insomnia.  Many people looking for natural ways to fall asleep choose Chamomile.  This flowering plant is widely cultivated throughout the world.  The leaves are commonly used to make chamomile tea, which can help you fall asleep if you drink it a half hour before bed.  You can also use chamomile in aromatherapy, by putting it in a sachet in your pillow case or by putting the essential oil on a cotton ball under your pillow.  Chamomile does not have to be used regularly to be effective and as such it is a great way to treat anxiety.

The flavonoid Chrysin is a key component of Chamomile and accounts for its ability to help with falling asleep.  It is gentle enough that it is often used to treat colic.

Bergamot relieves stress and helps you relax.  This citrus fragrance encourages restful sleep and is believed to be a natural anti-depressant.  If you are trying to figure out how to fall asleep, you should consider giving bergamot a try!

There are numerous ways that you can use the essences we have discussed to help you fall asleep.  You can buy an aromatherapy diffuser or simply place a few drops on a cotton ball and tuck it into your pillow.  Or you can massage your hands and feet with massage oils scented with these essential oils.  There are also many soaps, bath oils and shower gels that have these helpful essential oils in them.

Many of these are also available in teas – combining a topical and internal application is a great way to relax and wind down!  Just make sure that you get a tea meant for ingesting and that you don’t add the pure essential oil to your own tea!  Some essential oils are toxic if ingested.  Using aromatherapy for sleep can really help you to avoid dealing with the side effects of insomnia.
